Bert Crews is an artist, musician and FedEx delivery man who was looking to settle down in the small town of Tomales, CA. As luck would have it, Bank of America was selling their 19th-century brick-and-mortar location.
This was during a time when ATM machines were taking over in popularity and more physical locations were closing.
Bert had lots of experience converting warehouse buildings into loft homes, and he was more than up to the incredible task.
Within 24 hours, he purchased the old bank and got to work.
The most difficult task was putting in a kitchen and shower, since a bank is obviously not built for those types of things. His converted home also features a galley-style kitchen, toy-sized appliances and minimal furniture.
Still, Bert has managed to keep the essence of the historic bank alive and well both inside and out. In 2000, the bank home was even used in the movie Bandits, starring Bruce Willis and Cate Blanchett.
But the biggest question of all had to do with the bank's vault, which is still a functional safe to this day.
