Not long after settling into their home in Alton, Illinois, Gary and Beth Machens made an incredible discovery.
Five months after moving into the house, which was built in 1890, Gary was making repairs to their crumbling sidewalk when he removed a piece of stone wall and saw it: the entrance to a deep, mysterious tunnel.
Gary had suddenly found himself peering down into the 60-foot tunnel that runs underneath their home.
He called Beth at work and told her to come home as soon as she could; he'd just found something very unexpected.
According to the Alton Telegraph, three former town mayors lived in this home throughout the years, and it's unclear whether or not anyone even knew about the tunnel.
