The human imagination is truly amazing. Sometimes, clouds look like animals, shadows look like monsters, and trash can resemble something more like treasure.
Some of the best DIY projects are often from things we would have thrown out, like this this gorgeous dining room table made from 102-year-old floorboards.
Upcycling — or making something new out of items that would have gone to waste — is not only economical, but it's also creative and good for the planet.
But of the many upcycling projects I've ever seen, these reimagined coffee canisters might just take the cake!
When blogger Scott of Saws on Skates saw an empty Folgers can sitting in the trash, he didn't see trash; he saw inspiration — and the results are simply adorable.
According to his blog, this DIY is quick and simple for kids to do along with you, and a fun way to teach how trash can be turned into treasure. Just make sure to keep little fingers away from dangerous tools like a utility knife!

Just before throwing out his old coffee canisters, Scott was struck with a brilliant idea. He would transform the old containers into unique yard art!
In addition to old coffee canisters, Scott grabbed an empty non-dairy creamer bottle, an old instant coffee container, and some solar lights.
After his supplies were gathered, Scott used a utility knife to carefully remove the canisters' bottoms and cut holes into the fronts.
Then, he grabbed some outdoor spray paint.
Next, he painted the interior of the creamer bottle bright yellow.
Once that was dry, he painted the exterior dark brown. He let that dry outside.
After painting the other canisters, too, he used craft paint to start decorating.
He painted the area around the eyes yellow so that the eyes would appear to glow.
Then, he used caulk to glue the canisters on top of each other to form a tower.
As the caulk dried, he used tape to hold the structure together.
Next, he popped a little solar light inside the containers.
When he was done, he had adorable upcycled tiki statues, perfect for welcoming guests on the front porch!
With the lights on, the eyes and mouths seem to glow!
From trash to tiki statues, these old coffee canisters have definitely been made new again!
