Celebrities may seem to have perfect bodies, but it takes a lot of work to get there. In the lives of the rich and the famous, those efforts are heavily supported by hired help. A celebrity's team can include chefs, personal trainers, nutritionists, and more. In celebs' quest to work on their health and fitness, one diet that many of them are drawn to is the keto diet. The low-carb/high-fat diet is being praised by some as a lifestyle change that can help melt the pounds away.
Noom, which offers a psychology-based program for addressing health and wellness goals, gives insight into how keto works. "Foods high in fat and protein result in more satiety compared to processed carbohydrates," the app explains. "This change in fuel sources leaves followers feeling less hungry and consuming fewer calories throughout the day."
By reprogramming your body to address cravings and hunger in a more productive way, you can reap the benefits of the keto diet. It's important to note that researchers are still learning about how keto as a long-term lifestyle adjustment impacts the body. For a change that helps with weight loss, however, it's a viable option for many, including some of your favorite celebs.
Halle Berry
Halle Berry began speaking out in support of the keto diet in 2017. She explained in an appearance on Live With Kelly and Ryan that she's a good candidate for the diet because she's diabetic.
Halle also spoke to People about keto. "I eat healthy fats all day long, avocado, oil, coconut oil and I use butter, but don’t have any sugar. So when your body gets trained to burn fats, it’s constantly on fat-burning mode — that’s the secret," she noted.
Vinny Guadagnino
Vinny has coined himself the "Keto Guido" since debuting shredded abs that came from his keto weight loss. He even has a cookbook coming out titled The Keto Guido Cookbook: Delicious Recipes To Get Healthy and Look Great.
He also started @ketoguido Instagram account to give fans tips directly. In one post, he shared his suggestions for those starting with keto. "If you are just beginning #Keto for your weight loss journey and feel overwhelmed…relax…try not to overthink with thoughts like, 'I can never eat carbs again!?…I'm going to fail!'" he explained.
"For me, taking it one meal at a time has always been a huge factor…your hungry brain could be very tempt[ed] to eat junk food, but your full and satiated brain thinks more rationally."
Kim Kardashian
Kim Kardashian turned to Atkins 40 after gaining over 60 pounds while she was pregnant with her son, Saint. Along with the 1,800-calorie-per-day meal plan, she engaged in a strenuous exercise regimen. These days, Kim alternates between keto and a plant-based diet.
LeBron James
LeBron James famously turned to the keto diet when he slimmed down a good 20 pounds in 2014. "I had no sugars, no dairy, I had no carbs," the four-time NBA MVP told Sports Illustrated. "All I ate was meat, fish, veggies and fruit. That's it. For 67 straight days." He described the lifestyle change as a "mental challenge." He's rumored to abide by a diet that combines elements of keto and paleo to this day.
Katie Couric
In August 2018, the former Today anchor took to her Instagram story to discuss her experience with the keto diet. "So I've been doing the keto diet for a week now and I actually do feel better," she revealed. "The fourth or fifth day, I felt a little shaky and headachy, but I feel much better."
What Katie's describing sounds like a condition called the keto flu, flu-like symptoms that occur as your body transitions to ketosis. "I'm putting half-and-half in my iced coffee, and I gotta tell ya, it's damn good."
Al Roker
Al Roker has been sporting a dramatically different look since his 2003 bypass surgery, but now he's doing even more to keep his body in the best shape. Al started keto in September 2018. By March 2019, he was down 40 pounds.
Al's been sharing keto-friendly recipes on his Instagram. He spoke on Today about how the diet has helped him. "I've been checking blood work and vitals every month, and my cholesterol has gotten better,'' he said. "It was good to begin with. My blood pressure is great."
Megan Fox
Megan first experimented with keto back in 2014 after giving birth to her second child. "I cut out all bread and those sort of carbohydrates. No crackers, no pretzels, no chips. Nothing unhealthy," Megan told E! News. "The worst thing I put in my body is coffee, once a day."
Megan has practiced keto on and off since then. She reportedly trades off between keto and paleo on a regular basis.
Tim Tebow
Football-turned-baseball player Tim Tebow first opened up about following the keto diet in 2015. He told Delish, "A lot of people would think that's very boring, and sometimes it is, but you find ways to really spice it up," he says. "I eat a lot of things that run, swim or fly; I eat a lot of greens, a lot of Greek yogurt, a lot of avocado."
Alicia Vikander
When Alicia Vikander stepped into the iconic role of Lara Croft for Tomb Raider, she took on the keto diet two months before she began filming. "Since we were traveling so much over the holidays, we decided the keto diet would be best because it's easier to control the macros that way," Alicia's trainer, Magnus Lygdback told Popsugar.
"It's always tricky the first couple of days, but [Alicia's] willpower is just unbelievable, and she didn't complain, even though I could see she was struggling a little bit. She kept on bringing it every day."
Mark Consuelos
Mark hasn't spoken about keto himself, but wife Kelly Ripa revealed that it's the secret behind the 48-year-old Riverdale star's ripped body.
"My husband has gone full keto, which I don’t mind telling you is something I could never do. I just don’t have that level of discipline," she told Bon Appetit. "Mark says that I’m carb-o, because I always eat his bun if he gets a burger. And the fries."
