She is the oldest woman in Scotland, and she's finally ready to spill her secrets on a long, healthy life.
Jessie Gallan turned 109 on January 2, 2015, and started her day like any other morning — with a heaping bowl of porridge. The centennial credits her breakfast routine to her rare age, but told STV News, "Ach, I've never known any different."
The Aberdeen, Scotland woman had a humble upbringing, telling STV that even though her family rarely had a penny to spend, her childhood was always happy: "My mother fed us, made all our clothes and my father worked the cattle. There was nothing to worry about."
For many years, Gallan worked as a waitress and travelled — but unlike other women her age, she never married. Gallan says men are "more trouble than they're worth" and swore off marriage a long time ago.
It's pretty soul-crushing, but maybe true love isn't the answer to a long life. Maybe staying single and eating salty porridge every day is? Either way, Gallan must be doing something right…and I'll at least take the porridge part!
