A 7-month-old baby was shot and killed while riding in the back of her father's car. Now the family of that infant is devastated beyond belief and grieving the loss of their baby daughter.
According to police, on Wednesday night Desire Hughes was riding in a car with her father, 20-year-old Jeremiah Hughes. That's when bullets came flying at his car from another car, Toledo police say.
The baby girl was struck in the chest and pronounced dead at the hospital.
While Jeremiah was grazed by a bullet, he is in good physical condition after being treated and released. But the father is now coping with an unimaginable loss.
The Toledo Police Department shared an image of the late infant on Twitter.
"Just knowing that this baby is gone, it hurts," Carla Glover, a relative of the infant, told news station WTOL 11. She continued, "It hurts to know that this child is no longer with us."
"It just doesn't make any sense," she continued. "I don't have any understanding about it to know that babies are dying at the hands of guns. And it's not guns. It's the people behind the guns that's killing our babies."
A vigil was held on Thursday night so the baby's family, and the entire community, could come together and mourn her loss.
Toledo police are searching for the suspects and are asking anyone with information to call Crime Stoppers at 419-255-1111.
