WWII veteran Bryan Sperry was back on the football field for a chance to play in the University of Kansas' annual alumni scrimmage.
Back in 1948, Sperry played alongside his brother in the 1948 Orange Bowl against the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets. And while the Kansas Jayhawks lost that bowl game so many years ago, the memories and love of the sport lived on for Sperry. There's just something about Kansas football that Sperry loved so dearly and cherished over the years.
Sperry was only 17 years old when he first started playing for the University of Kansas Jayhawks. And when the drums of war called him to the cause at 19 years old, he joined WWII as an infantryman in the Bulge, one of the bloodiest battles in the history of the world.
After the war, he rejoined his favorite football program and played a few more years in KU blue! Nearly 70 years later, he decided to suit up and get back on the gridiron for one final play.
Make sure to watch what this active 89-year-old does in the video below, it's always great to see how you're never too young to do anything. Like the 95-year-old who celebrated his birthday by skydiving, these heroes keep proving themselves time and time again!
It was a simple as well as desperate game call. With time enough for one final play, they called it, a screen pass to Sperry wearing 28. Sperry would drive it up the gut straight for the post as the timer hit zero. With some lucky blocks, they might actually pull it off.
It all came down to this one final gutsy call, so at the 38 yard line Sperry turned and looked up. The rest was up to him.
