A 50-year-old pastor named David Evans was found dead of an apparent murder, but his wife's story that she told police just didn't add up.
After David was shot dead in his bed on Monday, March 22, 2021, wife Kristie Evans called 911 and told them that an intruder was in the home. Technically, her story was correct in that someone had entered the house and shot David. However, authorities believe that the suspect was 26-year-old Kahlil Deamie Square, who happened to know both David and Kristie intimately.
Police believe that Kristie and Kahlil thought up the plot in order to be together without David's involvement. They believe Kristie opened the door to him that night, and that the death was premeditated.
Kristie told police that she had woken up to hear a "pop" noise, followed by a smell of smoke. She went to see her husband with a gunshot wound to his face, taking his last gasps of breath before dying. Then, she told police, she ran out to find the intruder. This in itself seems somewhat unlikely.
You'd assume that if she was completely taken aback by the violent crime, that she wouldn't be looking outside to possibly suffer the same fate. But that's the story she told to 911. Eventually, she cracked and admitted to having some involvement in the murder.
Kristie admitted, per the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation, that she had purposely left the back door of their shared home open. But that wasn't all. She reportedly confessed to also supplying the gun and ammunition used in her husband's death.
As the investigation continued, Kristie told police that she and her husband used to meet with Kahlil Deamie Square, their 26-year-old lover, at Super 8 motels. The three of them had threesomes. Kristie escalated her relationship with Kahlil without David knowing about it.
"On one of those occasions, Kristie secretly dropped her phone number on the floor for Kahlil," an agent reported to The Oklahoman. "Kristie continued to communicate by phone daily with Kahlil without David's knowledge." The two then saw each other secretly.
Kristie spoke to the police a lot and admitted that Kahlil had stayed over at their home on March 17, 18, and 19. At the time, David was on a mission trip to Mexico. Kristie also claimed that David was abusive toward her, often calling her fat and ugly. While it's no excuse for murder, it may be what pushed Kristie toward a new relationship.
The Oklahoman reports that Kristie told Kahlil that "it would be nice to have more freedom." She also reportedly told her daughter that she "begged" Kahlil to pull off the crime. It's unfortunate that he went along with the plot. Oddly enough, David's last sermon made many notes on the devil.
"Who's believing in Jesus because of us?" his sermon reportedly started. "And if we're doing anything in that direction, expect for the enemy to come to destroy you. So don’t be shocked and start whining and crying. Expect it. Be prepared for it. If the devil is not attacking you, there is a reason. If the devil is attacking you, there is a reason."
Right now, the two aren't even in the same jail. According to the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation, Kristie Evans is being held in the Pontotoc County Jail, and Kahlil is in the Cleveland County Jail. "Based on evidence collected and interviews conducted, Kristie and Square were identified as suspects in David’s murder. Yesterday morning, Kristie met agents at the Ada Police Department where she confessed and was immediately placed into custody," they wrote.
Reports say that the gun and the ammo were actually David's. Kristie said that he had acquired both in a trade with a church member a month prior to his murder, which also seems suspicious. It's unclear as to why the pastor felt like he needed a gun and went about acquiring one in such a strange way.
News of the death had churchgoers from Harmony Free Will Baptist Church reeling. Churchgoer Alisa Mabry spoke with News 12 about the impact that Brother Dave had left. "He would give anyone the shirt off his back if he thought it would help them," she said. Brother Dave had been with the church for five years.
"He was such a loved pastor, and he had a lot to give still," she continued. "So that's going to be missed in the future, the things he could have done for other people." At the time of her interview, investigators had yet to get a confession from Kristie about what happened.
Kristie and David reportedly had three adult children together. So far, it seems as if those children have stayed quiet in regard to the media. Since this story has so many shocking aspects to it, chances are that they may need some time to fully process what happened.
Surely, this wasn't what Kristie imagined would happen. There were so many other solutions here that Kristie didn't take. It's possible that she didn't want to tarnish their image, but it ended up happening anyway — and now her husband is no longer here, and her children will be scarred for the rest of their lives.
