Most people would see a building that has become abandoned and run-down, and their first thought would be to stay away — there could be dangerous conditions inside, and any number of things could go horribly wrong. Most people see the "Condemned" or "Keep Out!" signs and turn back around.
Others grab their cameras and march right in. That's how we've found such incredible photos of an abandoned stadium in Detroit and of an abandoned mall as it snowed inside.
Darryl Moran of Subject Matters Photography has a special knack for discovering and documenting abandoned buildings in Pennsylvania and other areas in the Northeast. His high-quality photos have an eeriness to them that sends chills down the spine.
I was particularly struck by his photo series of the abandoned Monsour Medical Center in Jeanette, PA. Darryl also confesses that, of all the abandoned places he has visited, this hospital was "The darkest, creepiest, and most un-welcoming place to be in, and definitely at the top of the surreal chart. I really can't describe how eery this place felt, nor can my wife or son who each had their own creepy moments which forced them out of the building."
Particularly disturbing is what he found inside the morgue…

The hospital closed in 2006 and no interested buyers were ever found. As of 2014, the city was spending $25,000 a year to secure the space against trespassers and vandals.
This is a small price in comparison to the $2 million it would cost the city to demolish the site and do an environmental cleanup.
It has caused the community a great deal of stress. Neighborhood vandals have set the building on fire numerous times.
Additionally, residents are very worried about the possible environmental and safety hazards. There are rumors that radioactive materials are still present in the hospital.
Another major concern is that, with no one to guard the building, it's not as secure as it should be. Anyone can get access to the medical supplies.
Terrifyingly, this includes many drugs and hypodermic needles.
When Darryl went to the hospital, he planned to only get exterior shots, but he was amazed by how easy it was for him to get inside.
His family had to be careful as the building was rapidly deteriorating, but it wasn't just the physical condition of the building that made them uncomfortable.
Both his wife and son something "creepy" going on in the hospital so they decided to leave rather than venture forward.
Fortunately for them, they never had to see what was found abandoned in the morgue.
Darryl points to the morgue as one of the eeriest rooms in the hospital.
There were still-sealed bags of medical waste.
And there were even drawers of tissue samples.
In fact, drawers of these types of samples lined the walls.
It's not only the contents that are disturbing, it's the fact almost anyone can get such easy access to the contents of the hospital.
In addition to the medical supplies, drugs, and personal items that had been left behind, there were many files that had not been destroyed.
This might even include old patients' medical files.
At this moment, there are plans to get the building demolished in an eco-friendly manner as soon as possible.
Of course, similar plans have been made for the past nine years, all of which have fallen through because of lawsuits and tax liens.
Although the interiors are fascinating, let's hope the building is soon demolished so that something more positive can be added to the neighborhood.
