Life is strange. You spend as long as you can making memories to last until your old age and then, when you finally get there, you're lucky if you can remember half of it.
That's exactly why, to me, dementia and other memory loss problems are some of the most heartbreaking things that can ever happen to a person. As you can see in this video of a woman visiting her elderly grandmother, who has Alzheimer's, when someone can't remember the things and people they once loved, it's truly soul-crushing. However, in this video, you can see a little glimmer of hope, as the old woman remembers the song her granddaughter sings to her and starts to sing along.
We've seen this scenario time and time again. Seniors, like this unresponsive man in a nursing home, who have a tough time remembering seemingly easy things like their own name, sort of "wake up" when they hear a familiar song. Music is more powerful than we can ever imagine and that's exactly where the inspiration for this next video came from.
When founding member and guitarist of AC/DC, Malcolm Young, was diagnosed with dementia in 2014, fans were crushed that the man who brought the world rock anthems like "Highway to Hell" and "Back in Black" would no longer be able to remember his own hits. That's when fans at Brazil's largest rock radio station, 89FM, got the idea to play the some of the rockers songs and legendary guitar riffs for elderly patients with similar degenerative diseases.
What happened is both incredibly moving and speaks for itself.
