Family Can’t Afford To Adopt His Sister, So He Goes Out With A Sign To Beg For Help

Emily Martin fosters children for the county. It is no easy thing to bring a child into your home, love them dearly, then see them go. It has had a profound effect on her 9-year-old son Kiefer Martin.

Instead of fostering a child who will eventually leave, Kiefer wants a permanent sibling.

“They want someone to come home to stay, so that's our goal is to let them come home and stay forever," Emily told KVLY.

Kiefer especially wants a baby sister. They haven't had many foster sisters, so he thinks it would be special to adopt a girl.

"In foster care we have been having a lot of boys, and we have only had two girls, so we want a girl," says Kiefer.

However, adopting a child isn't cheap. The family would have to fly to wherever in the country the baby is. Moreover, it would cost them around $30,000 to bring a baby girl home. But Kiefer hasn't given up.

The 9-year-old started a lemonade stand to raise money to adopt a new sister.

"One person was just going to put in one dollar, but then he saw it was for adopting and then he gave us 10 dollars," Kiefer says.

Kiefer holds signs on the side of the road courting donations with his enticing lemonade and ices. When people hear what he's raising money for they tend to give more than just a few bucks.

While Kiefer has a long way to go, what he is doing for his future baby sister will make the day she comes home all the more precious.
