NY Man Charged In DUI Death Of Pregnant Fiancée And Unborn Child Didn’t Know They Died

A heartbreaking incident occurred on January 28, 2023. A car accident in Staten Island, New York, left a pregnant woman, Adriana Sylmetaj, and her unborn child dead. Shortly after the crash, Sylmetaj’s fiancé, Adem Nikeziq, was arrested and charged with manslaughter, criminally negligent homicide, and driving while intoxicated.

Just minutes before Nikeziq was scheduled to appear in court, he was informed by his lawyer, Mark Font, that Sylmetaj and their baby had died. "He was overcome with emotion and grief,” Font said.

"I informed my client that his fiancé and unborn child had died in the accident only moments before appearing in court," Font explained. "It is agreed that this was a horrific accident but not every accident rises to the level of criminality. As of today's date, the prosecutor has not supplied any evidence that alcohol was involved in this tragedy."

The crash occurred at around 4:45 a.m. local time. The Dodge sedan hit a barrier before crashing into a wooden pole. The impact of the crash caused Sylmetaj to be ejected from the passenger seat, and her baby was expelled from her body as a result. Nikeziq has entered a not guilty plea.

Sylmetaj’s brother, Al Sylmetaj, is struggling to wrap his head around this tragedy. "She was excited when she learned she was going to be a mother. It was something new to her. She couldn't wait to see the baby born. They were thinking on names but I don't think they came to any decision. … They were planning on a baby shower,” he told the Daily News.
