Step 1: Gather your supplies.

Your kit can be totally tailored to suit your tastes and needs. Below are some examples of what you can put it in a tin like this to survive.

  • Knife
  • Flashlight
  • Whistle
  • Compass
  • Mirror
  • Coffee filter
  • Striker strip
  • Lighter
  • Razor blade
  • Lint ball
  • Dollar bill
  • Dental floss
  • Super glue
  • Tweezers
  • MRE Beverage Bag
  • 1′ aluminum foil
  • 8 purification tablets
  • 4 waterproof matches
  • 4 strips of Gorilla tape
  • 2 Vaseline-coated cotton balls
  • 2 needles
  • 2 pins
  • 2 fishing hooks
  • 2 fishing sinkers
  • 2 bandages
  • 2 alcohol prep wipes

Step 2: Equip the lid and sides of your tin.

To save on room, utilize all surfaces of your tin. To the inside lid, adhere some Gorilla tape, a mirror, and your razor blade. On the interior sides, tape up a striker strip, fishing hooks, and needles. This will not only save space, but also prevent cuts and pokes with your sharper items.

Step 3: Begin to arrange your supplies.

Items like a whistle or a flashlight might seem clunky, but they're crucial. If you don't have any small supplies at home, check out websites like Amazon. These supplies could be the difference between life and death in an emergency situation.

You could include a variety of medical supplies.

These items will not only prevent infection, but they're also great for starting fires. Since space is of the essence, it's important to pick items that double-up in use — like super glue, which will not only seal rips and tears, but small cuts in the skin as well.

Perhaps you'd rather include some combustion tools.

Make sure your lighter has plenty of fluid, and if you're not using waterproof matches, test a few to make sure they haven't gotten wet. Dryer lint and Vaseline-dipped cotton balls make for great tinder. Fire is key in surviving emergencies, so be sure you have the tools to make it.

You can even carry water contamination supplies in the tin.

Clean, healthy water is essential to life. Coffee filters will help to remove dirt and debris, while the water purification tablets will kill bacteria. If you run out of the tablets, aluminum foil can be used to make a cup, which can then be boiled; tear a length of it and fold it up to keep on hand.

And your tin can prepare you for living off the land.

A tiny compass might be important if you're forced to travel through unfamiliar terrain — where you might have to provide your own food. Instead of dental floss, maybe pack some fishing wire instead. When your survival kit is all packed, you could wrap a length of wire around the tin itself so you're always ready.

The Altoid tin can even be a small tool kit.

Knives and blades aren't just used for violence. They can be used to dig, hammer, cut saplings, or stake your shelter. They also provide a sense of confidence, which is important in unfamiliar situations. A multi-use pocket knife is perfect, as it saves space and provides many services.

Finally, just remember to double-check it before you go.

When you think you have everything ready, go over your list one more time. Try to think of other crucial items that might come in handy, like pain killers, a tampon, or a birthday candle (for the wax). When you feel good about your supplies, pack it up. It might take a few tries to get it arranged, but that will only further familiarize you with your supplies.

Slip it into your pocket, purse, glove compartment, or backpack — and you're ready for anything! How would you customize your own survival kit? Let us know in the comments below!
