Divers Discover The Remains Of Man Missing For 43 Years In Sunken 1968 Pontiac

Pamela Shook went to the Caldwell County Sheriffs Department in North Carolina to request her father, Amos Shook's, records.

Amos had been missing since 1972. At the time Amos and his wife were separated. Pamela lived with her dad and when he didn't come home on that fateful night, many believed he had abandoned her at 14 years old.

"My parents were separated so it was just the two of us living together,” she says. “I got home probably around 8 p.m. that day and he never showed back up. The next day when I got up he still wasn’t there and neither was his car. I was scared.”

However, the authorities decided to reopen the case after Pamela's visit. Divers used advanced sonar technology that was not available in 1972 and discovered Amos Shook's 1968 Pontiac Catalina 30 feet underwater.

"We found a wallet and some ID cards were in it. It amazed us how preserved that stuff was," said Caldwell County Sheriff Alan Jones.

His body was also in the vehicle.  "Forty-three years — that's a long time for somebody to be missing and for a family to wonder where they are at," he said.

Pamela finally feels like she has some closure.

He said [the Lt. Sheriff], ‘Pam, we found your daddy’s car.’ It was like I lost all of my blood,” she tells WSOC. “It was so overwhelming for me.”

With the help of divers and sonar technology the car was quickly uncovered — something impossible in 1972, when he had initially disappeared. Inside they found Amos Shook's remains.

Though the family had already memorialized him, never knowing what happened to the Air Force veteran devastated them for a life time. Now they can finally have some closure.

“This is my husband’s car. For 43 years we have had to live with this not knowing anything. Now maybe we can put his body to rest. We have to go to North Carolina Friday to be interviewed, but God answered our prayers. We can have closure," his wife, Katie Smook said.
