Athlete Lives An Optimistic Life With An Artificial Heart While Waiting For A Transplant

In 2012, Andrew Jones was diagnosed with a heart condition that would soon change his life tremendously.

Jones had become hooked on fitness in college and was an avid runner who hit the gym hard. He was incredibly fit. The last thing he expected was to have health issues at such a young age.

One morning, after his run, it felt as if he was breathing through a sponge. Soon enough, he could hardly stand for 10 minutes straight, and he'd started to cough up blood.

Doctors told him that he had a cardiomyopathy, which makes it so the heart can't pump blood nearly as efficiently as a healthy heart.

This left Jones incredibly ill, and doctors let him know that he was going to have to get an artificial heart. Waiting for a donor heart simply wasn't an option, as there wasn't enough time on his side.

At first, this news was devastating. I mean, what sane human being would be 100 percent happy about having to be hooked up to a machine for an indefinite amount of time?

Yes, it's wonderful that science has made it possible to keep a human alive, even when their heart can't do its job and there isn't another to replace it with. However, it's scary to think about walking around without a pulse…

Yet, Jones isn't your average 26-year-old man. This fitness model wasn't about to let a battery-powered heart stop him from what he loved to do while he waits for his donor match.
