Dad Discovers 13-Year-Old’s Body After He Fell 200 Feet While Out Hiking Without an Adult

We want our children to explore the world with endless curiosity, but when something goes awry and we aren’t there to help, so much guilt sinks in. Our primal urge to protect our children from harm’s way kicks in for most of us the moment they enter the world, so them getting hurt or, unthinkably, killed, is something I think keeps most parents up at night.

One family in Arkansas is grappling with that harrowing reality after a dad found his 13-year-old son’s body following a 200-foot fall from Brewer Bluff at the Buffalo National River, according to the New York Post.

Police stated on Facebook that the teen lost his footing while on a hike with a friend, and officials urged tourists to keep a safe distance from the edge, reminding them the terrain is “rugged and steep.”

“Buffalo National River staff and I send our condolences to this young man’s family,” park Superintendent Angela Boyers shared in the statement, per the Post. “We also thank the responders from the local communities that showed up to assist with this incident.”

KHBS identified the boy as Kayleb Lynn Eddings and reported that his father, Toby Eddings, claimed to be the first to arrive and find his son. The National Park Service is leading the investigation along with Searcy County officials. So far, officials say no warnings are being issued about the area other than a reminder about its terrain.

In Kayleb’s obituary, his family described him as “loved by everyone who had the fortune to meet him.” He loved riding his four-wheeler and spending time with friends. The memorial noted he was particularly fond of collecting Hot Wheels with his dad, hunting with his grandpa, and “aggravating” his two younger brothers. It also detailed that he was very close with his mom.

“There are no words to express the deafening quiet that has filled the space where Kayleb’s voice once reverberated,” the obituary added. “While that space will never be filled, one can find comfort in whispering of the wind, the flutter of a butterfly, the beauty of a buck and most of all, the eternal presence of God.”
