When 5-year-old Steven was diagnosed with autism, his parents began decided to look into getting their son a service dog. After researching online, they discovered Ry-Con Service Dogs, which helps to train dogs for service roles for children and adults with special needs.
The family decided to visit the kennel to see determine if there was a good fit for them. On that particular day, Steven met a service dog named Aragorn.
In the video, the boy runs and plays in the yard, and Aragorn follows him closely. The trainers hoped to demonstrate the tasks of some of their trained dogs. As the little boy runs towards the road, the dog performing a command we call "curbing," where the dog puts its body in front of the child and the danger. The dog is able to stop the boy from going into the street and leads him back to the yard, where he'll be safe.
"We never leave the child unsupervised, but this can add seconds to a parent's ability to intervene," Mark Mathis, operator of Ry-Con Service Dogs, told LittleThings.
The Briard breed is known as "a heart of gold wrapped in fur." The dogs are a very loyal and protective breed.
These dogs have a great temperament and are good with children, which is why the breed is one of the more popular choices for service dogs for children with autism.
