Residents of Central Louisiana were taken aback when they spotted young black bears roaming around their neighborhood over the last 10 days.
"I was shocked, amazed — 'What's a bear doing in my yard?' " a resident named Dennis Carmouche told the Associated Press.
The baby bears are simply lurking around as they search for a new home. According to the news agency, “It's the season when mother bears chase off yearling cubs so they won't be attacked by any big males that come calling.”
But, unlike female baby bears, males aren’t allowed to remain within “visiting distance” from their mother.
The Louisiana residents have also seen the bears hiding in trees, which is a natural instinct for frightened little cubs.
"They know they're safe up a tree, even though it happens to be right in the middle of a neighborhood,” said wildlife biologist Maria Davidson.
Yet, some residents, like Patsy Trevillion, don't seem to mind the unexpected visit. She's been watching the bear in her backyard every day, joking that the animal is her "little grandchild."
Biologists have placed traps to safely capture the bears, but haven’t had any luck quite yet. The day the bear is taken away, Trevillion said she's "sure going to miss him."
