This Touching Story Teaches Us To Find Our Own Happiness By Helping Others Find Theirs

Everyone wants to find happiness in life. No matter what our circumstances, and no matter what hand we are dealt, the search for true contentment is at the heart of everyone's goals.

The question, then, is how?  How are we supposed to even begin looking for it? There have been many touching stories told of the different ways people have sought and found their own version of happiness. For example, this police deputy chose to sit with an old man and wait together for his bus. That, in my opinion, made the officer happy on a deeper level.

The story below captures the essence of one way that we could all look for happiness in our lives. A group of people were gathered in a room, and participated in a social, but ultimately, very psychological, experiment. At the end, each of them found out exactly what they could do to attain joy.

Once, a group of 50 people was attending a seminar. Suddenly, the speaker stopped and decided to do a group activity.

He started giving each person a balloon. Each one was asked to write his or her name on it using a marker pen.

Then, all the balloons were collected and put in another room.

Next, they were let in that room and asked to find the balloon that had their name on it within five minutes.

Everyone was frantically searching for their name, colliding into each other, pushing around others, and there was utter chaos.

At the end of five minutes, not a single person could find their own balloon.

At the end, everyone was asked to randomly collect a balloon and give it to the person whose name was written on it.

Within minutes, everyone had their own balloon.

The speaker reflected on what this exercise meant. This, she said, is exactly what’s happening in all of our lives.

Everyone is frantically looking around for happiness, but no one knows where to find it.

Our happiness lies in the happiness of other people. Give them their happiness, and in return, you will get your own happiness.

And this is the purpose of human life.
