Honestly, I don’t remember a time when I wasn’t a fan of the Beach Boys. I grew up with Pet Sounds playing 24 hours a day in my house, and my very first CD was a mixtape featuring “I Get Around.”
While I may have seemed a little eccentric in my musical tastes when all of my friends were listening to Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera, my affection for the Beach Boys was well warranted — they’re still some of the most respected musicians of the sixties, much like their pop-rock contemporaries the Animals.
While their initial hey-day was in the early to mid-sixties shortly after the Wilson brothers formed the band in California, they also had a major moment during the summer of 1985. The played to audiences totaling close to 2 million on July 4th.
Then, just nine days later, they followed up with their now-historic performance at 1985’s famous Live Aid concert. Organized to provide famine relief to the nation of Ethiopia, Live Aid was a double-concert that took place simultaneously in Philadelphia and London.
Everyone from Duran Duran to this very scandalous pairing of Tina Turner and Mick Jagger performed. But for my money, the moment qhenthe Beach Boys take the stage and look out across that massive crowd has to be crowning moment of this epic show!
Watch their epic performance of not one, but two, of their most famous songs!
