The Beatles Give Their First Hilarious American Interview In 1964

On February 7, 1964, the Beatles arrived on American shores at New York's John F. Kennedy Airport. Before they could even make their way to the Ed Sullivan Theater for their iconic debut television performance, they had already inspired a frenzy of fans to greet them with signs declaring their affection for the Fab Four. Their floppy hair and catchy tunes quickly stole the hearts of teen girls across the country with three consecutive appearances on Sullivan's show, the first of which on February 9 drew in a record-breaking 73 million viewers.

But it wasn't just their music that made the fans go wild. The group had a reputation for charming crowds with their knack for humor, too, especially when it came to responding to silly questions brought to them by the press. They were constantly plagued with questions about the authenticity of their hair, with many reporters insisting the mop-topped quartet had to be sporting wigs. In their first American interview, fresh off the plane in NYC, an interviewer asks if they plan on getting any haircuts while they're in town. George Harrison, known as the "quiet Beatle," pipes up with their characteristic quick wit saying, "I had one yesterday." His cohorts, Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr, and John Lennon, all confirm he's telling the truth.

Their quips and cleverness would go on to inspire some of the classic scenes in their first feature film, A Hard Days Night, later that same year. Take a look at the video below for more of their hilarious retorts.
