Black foxes are actually not their own species, but red foxes with a color variation. These "color morphs" of red foxes are red, black, and "cross," or a combination of red and black fur.

In winter, black foxes sometimes develop silver tips on their fur, giving them an ashy gray look. For this reason, they're often referred to as "silver foxes," but they're actually the same species as red foxes.

Except for Antarctica, foxes can be found on every continent, and as such, they've been featured in many myths and legends across the globe. Most commonly, they're associated with trickery, but they're not usually evil.
