An 11-year-old Indiana boy has died following an incident involving fireworks.
According to a press release from the Indiana State Police, which was released on Monday, the child was Camrynn Ray McMichael. Police noted that the child, who lived in Mount Vernon, was "seriously injured" by fireworks he may have been playing with on Sunday evening.
He was being transported to an Evansville hospital but died before he arrived.
There are a lot of questions that remain unanswered about how the boy was injured. Police said, per the release, that the investigation is ongoing. An autopsy is scheduled for Tuesday, July 5.
According to Sergeant Todd Ringle, Camrynn was the only child amid a group of adults. The adults were setting off fireworks. No one else was injured in the incident.
The child's mother, Kyrra Lynn, opened up about the kind of kid he was when speaking to Today. "He was dedicated, hard working, (on the) honor roll, and never got in trouble," she said. "And if he did it’s because he wanted to make everyone laugh. No matter the situation he tried to be happy." She also said that he loved sports like football, soccer, and basketball.
She also said that Camrynn was an amazing brother to his younger sister. "He protected her like a big brother should," said Lynn. "He’s every parent's dream of a boy."
The grieving mom took to Facebook to share a warning with others about fireworks. "I'll never see my son again," she wrote. "Don't ever think it can't happen to yours."
