In 1989, the remains of an unidentified teenage girl were found in Bullhead City, Ariz., near streets called Riverside Drive and Castleberry Lane. For decades, she was referred to as “Castleberry Kate” because her actual identity, and what happened to her before her remains were found, were unknown.
Now, according to ABC 15 Arizona, the identity of Castleberry Kate was finally revealed due to DNA evidence. But there are still a lot of questions, like why the girl, who was likely in her late teens when she died, was never reported missing. And others want to know if she has family members still alive today.
She was always referred to as ‘Castleberry Kate’ because of where her remains were found.
In 1989, a construction crew in Bullhead City found the remains of a girl thought to be around 17 to 19 years old. Because there were no missing persons reports in the area that matched the age and gender of the remains found on the site, the case remained cold for almost 40 years. The girl was thought to have been dead for as little as two but up to 10 years before her remains were even found, which added another huge layer of mystery to the case.
Now, per ABC 15 Arizona, the girl who was always referred to as Castleberry Kate instead of simply Jane Doe has a name and identity. In late 2025, a DNA match with 99% certainty identified her as Sonya Langan. Family members still in the area made it possible to test their DNA against the remains that were found, leading to the confirmed identity of the girl.
A missing persons report was never filed.

One reason why the case was so hard to pin down was not only the timeline of what happened to her, but also the fact that a report was never filed by Langan’s family to report her missing. The family members later told authorities that she left home in 1982 when she was around 17 or 18 years old due to some family issues. She was reportedly never heard from after that. When her remains were found, there was a bullet hole in her skull, which means that the homicide portion of the case remains open.
Due to details from DNA Doe Project, which took on the case to match Langan’s DNA and identify her, her remains were found not far from her home. It’s possible that she died shortly after she left home and that she might have even returned home at some point, had she not been shot and killed.
The case was discussed for years.

Long before Castleberry Kate was finally identified by name, internet sleuths discussed the case on and off. And after the news of her identity was released, those same armchair detectives on Reddit shared their thoughts on what happened to the girl as a teenager and why her family never came forward.
“Maybe I’m being overly judgmental, but it doesn’t seem surprising that a family who lets their kid drop out of school at 9th grade would be unconcerned by the fact she disappeared and never contacted them again,” someone commented on the post.
Another person commented, “You would think a body being found would have been mentioned in the local newspaper and local news TV. But the family did not wonder?”
