Just one week after the BBC offered a chilling aerial tour of Auschwitz, new footage has captured another moment in history. This video shows what the abandoned city of Pripyat looks like today, after the city was evacuated in 1986 following a nuclear explosion at the Chernobyl Nuclear facility.
In 2014, videographer Danny Cooke had the opportunity to visit the city while working for CBS News' 60 Minutes. During this time, he captured chilling video footage that features empty apartment buildings, a rundown ferris wheel, and rusting hospital beds. As he walks through the houses, he sees personal items left untouched, ranging from kids' toys to cooking supplies.
The most haunting part comes around 2:45, when he sees thousands of gas masks strewn across the floor of a building.
"Chernobyl is one of the most interesting and dangerous places I've been… I can't imagine how terrifying it would have been for the hundreds of thousands of Ukrainian citizens who were forced to evacuate," Cooke wrote in the video's caption.
"There was something serene, yet highly disturbing about this place. Time has stood still and there are memories of past happenings floating around us," he added.
