When the Calbuco volcano in Chile erupted for the first time in decades on April 22, 2015, it painted the sky with a thick, ascending cloud of smoke that is almost impossible to believe.
On the same day the quadruple rainbow captured in New York went viral, the time-lapse video of the volcano below is also making waves on the internet. The volcano, which stands at about 6,500 feet, released smoke that turned from a very light color to a deep fierce red.
Chile has 90 active volcanoes, but Calbuco — which last erupted in 1972 — is considered one of the nation’s most dangerous.
Airlines cancelled flights and more than 1,500 people were forced to evacuate, CNN reported. And many of these nearby residents were left shaken.
"It was impressive to see an enormous mushroom cloud, with the immense force of the volcano, and to see the ashes,” one resident told the publication. “At that point, there was a lot of panic, lots of chaos, traffic jams, people going to supermarkets, everyone looking for water, trying to take out money from the ATMs.”
When speaking with Reuters, another resident compared the volcano’s sound to a “big tractor trailer passing by the road, rattling and shaking, guttural rumbling.”
