I'm not sure when keeping chipmunks as pets became an actual thing that people do, but judging by the video below, it is absolutely real. The diminutive little critters are definitely cute, but they're also probably much smarter than we give them credit for.
We already know, from previous videos that we've shared, that chipmunks have a very strong motherly instinct, have the strength and quickness to defend themselves when needed, and have what are probably the cutest, chubbiest cheeks (perfect for packing away peanuts) in the entire animal kingdom.
But I had no idea that chipmunks also had their very own special morning routines. And I certainly didn't know that, during those morning routines, they become the most adorable things I've ever seen in my whole entire life.
In the video below, you'll get to meet Bikke the Chip, a pet chipmunk that does something so unorthodox that its owner had to bring out the camera and film it just so people would believe him!
As the camera rolls, Bikke begins its morning routine by stretching his jaw and cheeks, sniffing his blanket, and crawling towards the camera. He then goes into a lengthier stretching routine that involves pulling itself across the bed, stretching out flat as a pancake, and opening its chubby cheeks as wide as it possibly can.
The entire 90-seconds clip is some of the cutest video footage you'll ever see, but my heart nearly exploded when I got to around :35 and Bikke started yawning.
This might just be the coolest chipmunk ever and, after seeing this, I think I might want to have about fifty chipmunks as pets. Okay, maybe just one, but can you imagine how cute fifty pet chipmunks would be?
