Sound it out. That's what my teachers would tell me when I was learning to read and write in kindergarten. Let's face it, "sounding it out" isn't all that effective in adulthood.
Does anyone else find themselves typing out the word "are" instead "our" because they sound similar in your head? The English language doesn't help either. The rules are completely arbitrary.
"I before E except after C." Lies! I mean just ask the word "neighbor' or "weigh" or "science."
Spelling is hard. Almost every English teacher I've ever had prefaced the beginning of the school year with, "Pardon my bad spelling." Even the pros aren't pros and with a spell-checking culture — do we really need to know how to spell completely precisely anymore? The nerd part of me says yes, while the tech-y part of me whispers: It's OK to rely on technology, that's what the kids are bopping to anyways.
