One Costa Mesa couple just went through an incredibly scary journey with their newborn baby. Jacob Boeckmann and wife Jessie Miller Boeckmann welcomed their daughter via a surrogate who lives in Ukraine. But just days after the delivery, they awoke to an entirely different reality than they'd anticipated.
Two days after their baby's birth, Russia invaded Ukraine. When the couple looked out the window in the morning, the streets were flooded with people. Lines for the ATM were wrapped around the corner. People were desperate to make it out alive.
They realized they needed to get out — and fast.
They got in their car and started driving. But what they assumed would be a seven-hour drive turned into a full day and night in the car. The streets were simply jammed. They realized they needed to go on foot.
The couple took to the streets, along with their newborn. They walked for miles and miles, finally making it to the gates at the border. "The situation was continuing to get more volatile and people were getting more desperate," the new dad said of the scene.
They couple did make it out, but they now say they feel guilt at being able to escape while so many people are still trying to flee.
