David Abeyta joined the Air Force and seemingly disappeared off the face of the Earth. His mother, Mary Schofield, hadn't seen him in decades. Still, Mary always wondered where her son was. She never forgot him.
“There’s never been one moment ever that I haven’t thought about him,” Mary told CBS Los Angeles' Amy Johnson. Then one day, David's brother saw an article in the paper about David's success at L.A. City College. Mary called up the reporter who wrote the story, Julia Shimicu, and asked if she could reach him. Like another mother and son, Tristen and Jennie, the two were reunited after 25 years. So what happened to David in the meantime?
“I made a lot of mistakes. And I felt guilty, I think,” David says. “I had suffered from depression and it just seemed like nothing I could do was right. I wanted to make sure everything was right before I went back [to my mom]."
After the Air Force, he hit rock bottom and became homeless. David lost a child, causing his marriage to fall apart, and he began to struggle with a gambling addiction. The veteran was eventually accepted into the SRO Housing Corporation Skid Row. There he got back up on his feet and went back to college. That's where the article came in.
“I’m glad to have this moment with my mom,” David says.
