The search for Brian Laundrie is officially over. The FBI's Denver office said on Thursday that dental records confirmed the remains found at the Carlton Reserve in Florida are indeed his.
Earlier in the day, it became clear that the skeletal remains were human remains. "They are human remains, no doubt there. I would say that the remains were consistent with one individual, you know skeletal remains," North Port Police spokesperson Josh Taylor told CNN.
Other belongings, such as clothing believed to be Laundrie's, were also found at the site.
Brian Laundrie went missing last month after he returned home from a cross-country trip without fiancée Gabby Petito. Her body was later found and her death ruled a homicide. The cause of death was found to be manual strangulation, and Laundrie seemed to be the only suspect in the case.
A major break in the case came when Laundrie's parents agreed to help in the search. They led investigators to one of the trails their son frequented. There investigators found items belonging to the fugitive, such as a backpack and a notebook.
Shortly after, remains that were suspected to be Laundrie's were discovered.
