1. Carat
I'm sure you've heard of this phrase before. It represents the weight of the diamond. The higher the carat, the greater the price.
2. Point
This is the unit of measurement used to describe the carat.
3. Cut
This refers to the outline of the diamond. Popular shapes include round, princess, pear, and oval.
4. Fancy Cut
This is a shape other than round. These can include princess, pear, and oval.
5. Stonesetting
This is the way in which you secure the gemstone. It can certainly enhance the appeal of the ring.
6. Brilliance
The is essentially the brightness of a diamond and what makes it sparkle.
7. Fire
This describes the colors produced from the diamond distributing white light from within.
8. Sparkle
This is how much light is reflected from the diamond while in movement.
9. Fluorescence
Some diamonds appear a little blue when hit by ultraviolet light. But they should never have a strong fluorescence!
10. Blemish
You probably don't want this, as it's considered a flaw. It can affect the value of the diamond even though many blemishes don't make the diamond itself look any different to the human eye.
11. Color
The closer the diamond is to being colorless, the greater value it has. No jeweler has any power in the matter because this is simply a matter of nature.
12. Girdle
This is the band around the diamond's circumference. It's the blue mark on the diamond above.
13. Crown
The portion of the diamond above the girdle.
14. Pavilion
This is the part below the girdle.
15. Table
This is the top of the diamond. It shouldn't be too small or too large because it will mess with the fire and brilliance.
16. Polish
Finally, this is the diamond's finish and clean. A good polish can make the fire and brilliance even greater!
