It's amazing how easy the internet (and YouTube in particular) has made it to get answers to questions you didn't even realize you had. Nowadays, all you have to do when you want to know pretty much anything is type a few words in Google and you're well on your way to knowing the answer, watching a video about the answer, or getting a step-by-step tutorial that demonstrates how to do whatever it is you were searching for. It's a fine world we live in, folks!
With that in mind, the video below should answer a few questions for you that you probably never even realized you wanted to know. I drive by ditches on the side of the road all the time, but I've never once wondered how the grass in those steep embankments gets cut. I guess I always just assumed that someone got in there with a little lawnmower and did the job.
What if, however, you live in a place where those ditches can stretch on for miles and miles? Certainly, a regular riding lawnmower won't be up to the task. It's much too steep and too big of a job for your backyard John Deere to handle.
That's where the amazing, terrifying machine in this video comes in. Dubbed the Claas Xerion 3300 VC "Octopus," this tractor-like contraption has four extendable "arms" with massive blades on the end that stick out from one side of the machine and take care of all the grass in those lengthy ditches. Watching it do its job is surprising, cool, and kind of hypnotic.
I love how each bladed end of the arms can adjust its angle independent of the other arms and, although it only has four arms, I love that this thing is called an octopus.
Sure, maybe you never actually asked the question, "How does the grass in those ditches get cut?" — but learning that the answer is this cool is a whole lot of fun, right?
