While most of us go to college to try to get the best education possible, it's also well known that some college students would rather focus on partying. The major hope is that those students don't get in enough trouble to warrant an embarrassing headline.
Rosie Cole wasn't so lucky. The 21-year-old Hull University student from England had a bit to drink, and it inspired her to take on a dare. The dare came from her housemates, who as you would expect were also intoxicated at the time. They challenged Rosie to see if she could fit inside a clothes dryer. It's quite a hard task for any adult.
Still, Rosie tried her best. After all, a dare is a dare — right?
"It wasn't until I wiggled both my hips in and got my legs crossed behind me that I realized I couldn't get out," Rosie said. "I am a bit dramatic so I didn't think it was that bad at first and my housemates were making me laugh."
Then panic started to set in. Would the rest of the semester happen while Rosie was still lodged in the dryer? Luckily, there were people on hand to help. But it still made for quite a memorable and definitely embarrassing time.
"When I realized I couldn't uncross my legs and my hips were stuck I got a bit worried," she continued. "Especially when I tried to free myself the dryer tipped forward and I couldn't get myself out. My arms were starting to hurt trying to hold myself up, and it was pretty hot inside the dryer."
That's something they may not have considered. Even if the dryer wasn't on, it could have been hot if someone just used it. Plus, being crammed inside a dryer may end up heating you up, because it's such a small, enclosed, and insulated place. That would definitely give Rosie reason to panic.
Rosie's friends tried their hardest to get her out. But when they were unsuccessful, they knew it was time to bring the professionals in. Three firefighters showed up after Rosie's housemates called emergency services, but they were reportedly baffled when they realized Rosie was technically an adult and not a child.
"When they rang emergency services and told them someone got stuck in a dryer the person on the phone asked how old they were," said Rosie's housemate Lydia Dunwell. "It was so embarrassing. They had to tell her it was a grown 21-year-old woman. I was just in stitches."
While the firefighters were able to get Rosie out in record time, they were still a little shocked about the call. In fact, they knew the situation was ridiculous and even made a few jokes at the expense of the housemates. "When they were leaving they opened the washing machine and asked if anyone else needed saving," said Rosie.
"I've never tried it before, and I can definitely say I won't be trying it ever again," Rosie said of the stunt. "It was definitely not one of my finest moments, I will be leaving this one out of the CV." However, let's just hope that none of her future employers google her. And if they do, fingers crossed that they have a sense of humor.
While Rosie's "dare" was a bit unfortunate, it was mostly harmless. Surely the firefighters got a good laugh by what they saw, and the only injury happened to be a few smashed toes — but nothing that'll leave any permanent damage. As far as college pranks go, this one was actually somewhat tame.
However, it's a big "don't try this at home" warning for the next set of college housemates who might think of the same thing. The good news is that Rosie's housemates stood by her side during the entire incident. They didn't leave her there to figure out the problem by herself.
According to the New York Post, Rosie and her roommates confessed to having had a couple of bottles of zinfandel wine along with a few shots of honey tequila. Part of the reason behind both the dare and the alcohol? Absolute boredom. Due to lockdown, things are a lot different around the world.
In a way, drinking with housemates is the more responsible choice instead of going to a party, where plenty of people risk getting infected. But why choose to call firefighters instead of campus security? "They save cats from trees so maybe they could save students from tumble dryers," Rosie joked.
The friends also reported, per the New York Post, that they honestly didn't think that Rosie would fit at all. However, she found a way to align herself into the dryer. While she was mostly unsuccessful, it's doubtful that anyone will ever dare Rosie to do the "impossible" ever again.
"I'm not going to lie, I never do my own washing anyway," Rosie admitted. "I've never even used the dryer — but maybe I should start putting my clothes in it when they're not on my body." Let's hope that Rosie's experience hasn't made her too scared to start learning. Not knowing how to do laundry is something you'd expect from a freshman — not a 21-year-old.
This will, without a doubt, be one of those stories that lives on forever. And the fact that the video went viral will definitely help jog Rosie and her housemates' memories, especially if they happened to be a little foggy that night. This is, without a doubt, Rosie's claim to fame.
And while this is pretty funny and everyone left the situation with smiles on their faces, it's also a great reminder to drink responsibly and always have friends and trusted allies nearby to help keep you safe. College boredom is a real thing — especially these days. But there are much better ways to entertain yourself outside of the laundry room.
