Dancing with the Stars stars Nyle DiMarco and Peta Murgatroyd gave the audience, judges, and viewers chills with their contemporary-freestyle dance to Disturbed's cover of the Simon & Garfunkel classic "The Sound of Silence.”
While they were thrilled to win the coveted mirror ball trophy, the biggest win was the message behind the song and its epic choreography, which gave a voice to the deaf community.
As a deaf contestant (and also the first deaf contestant and winner on America’s Next Top Model), DiMarco shared his gratitude to have such a powerful platform to share his message.
"My interpretation of the song is that for hundreds of years my Deaf community has suffered oppression, marginalization, and language deprivation… but now we're starting to find hope in this new world," DiMarco wrote on Facebook. "It is time for our soundless message to be heard, hence the Sound of Silence… It is our time."
The dancing duo’s expression on the dance floor especially mesmerized the judges, including Carrie Ann Inaba who declared it the best she's seen in 22 seasons of the show.
DiMarco has been impressing the judges all season. He kicked off his winning streak with his killer performance of the cha-cha to "Cake by the Ocean."
With a baby grand on fire in the background and sharp and powerful twists and turns, DiMarco earned a whopping 30 out of 30 from the judges for his performance, which led to the pair’s memorable win.
