In November 2013, Lauren Hill, an incoming freshman at Mount Saint Joseph University, had committed to playing for the women's basketball team. Less than a month later, she was diagnosed with an inoperable brain tumor. Completely blindsided, she was given less than 18 months to live and believed she would pass before her first season game.
Coach Dan Benjamin received an unusual request from Hill's parents, who asked Benjamin to try to move up the date of the team's Nov. 15 season opener because they feared their daughter might not be alive by then.
Thankfully, Mount Saint Joseph University women's basketball team was given a waiver to move the date of its season opener up two weeks to allow the terminally ill player to play. Now, Hill will be taking the floor to fulfill the dream of a lifetime.
"It definitely gives me something to look forward to and to live for," Hill told Yahoo. "Playing basketball really helps me get my mind off things. The girls feed me energy. If I'm feeling down, they pick me up and help me keep going. They're kind of my fuel."
