Have you ever been out in public and seen another individual do something that you would consider discourteous and wondered why you didn’t have the nerve to say something to them? Well, as it happens, there are times when you really shouldn’t say anything at all, because you really don’t know enough about the person or their situation to put your two cents in.
Thomas Scott worked at Walgreens in Fort Worth, Texas. He worked a 10-hour shift and was quite exhausted, but he made his way to the bus station to head home.
He had taken this bus home for what seemed like a million times. He got on, greeted the driver in his usual manner, and looked for a seat on an almost full bus. It was the first time he had been able to sit down in nearly 11 hours, and it felt good.
Once he was situated, he looked up and noticed a teenage boy sitting in the front part of the bus. Thomas then noticed that he was actually sitting in the reserved seating meant for the vulnerable or disabled population.
The next round of people got on the bus, including a mom with two young children. She almost immediately eyed where the teenage boy was sitting and appeared visibly disgusted. To her, he may have looked perfectly healthy, but appearances can be deceiving.
“Do you realize that you’re sitting in a reserved seat for vulnerable people? If you had any manners you’d offer that seat to someone more deserving,” the woman said to the boy out loud in front of everyone on the bus.
With that, Thomas watched as the boy stood up completely unafraid and reached for the leg of his jeans to expose something that would explain everything.
