Here at LittleThings, we're not strangers to seeing babies come into the world. We were absolutely flabbergasted by how this giraffe mom kept walking around in the moments before her baby was born, and we were stunned when a mama moose pushed out not one, but two babies!
But rarely do we get to see the miracle of birth in the ocean! Water covers more than 70 percent of our planet, but most of it remains unexplored. There are species living in its depths that we have yet to discover, and even some species that come up for air remain a mystery to us. One of those species is the false killer whale.
As its name suggests, the false killer whale gives the appearance of being a killer whale, but is actually a part of the dolphin family. These animals have not been extensively studied in the wild.
But a few lucky whale watchers off the coast of Dana Point, CA, were treated to the sight of a lifetime when they came across a pod of 40 false killer whales. They were stunned when they pushed up against the boat, but before they knew it, they saw a cloud of blood come up to the surface and with it, a tiny calf!
According to Captain Tom Southern, who was steering the boat, several members of the pod spent about 10 minutes pushing the calf to the surface while he learned how to swim!
