Police Dog Paws Goodbye At Fallen Officer’s Funeral Service

In 2013, a K-9 officer named Figo watched as his partner was killed in the line of duty. K-9 Officer Jason Ellis died in a violent ambush in Bardstown, KY.

Law enforcement officers stood at parade rest following Officer Ellis' funeral service. In a powerful photo that quickly went viral, Figo bowed his head and reached his paw onto the casket in an incredible show of grief and respect. "Figo was almost giving him that final hug goodbye. I think that picture brought more tears than anything," Bardstown Police Chief Rick McCubbin told the Daily News. The video below shows live footage from the funeral as Figo approaches his best friend's casket. It's truly a touching moment.

In the days after his death, officers transformed a cop car parked in front of their station into a memorial for Officer Ellis. The community organized candlelight vigils, a fund for the officer's family, and a scholarship for students looking to pursue a career in law enforcement. As for Figo, he was retired after his partner’s death and went home to live with Officer Ellis’ family.
