They Built A Tiny Home On The Water…Literally!

Catherine King and Wayne Adams decided that the typical home didn’t float their boat. They wanted to live on their own compound of tiny houses…in the middle of the sea!

So they built Freedom Cove, a floating compound filled with greenery, which is located in coastal inlets of Cypress Bay in Clayoquot Sound, B.C. in Canada. The colorful complex is only accessible by boat and it takes a half an hour to get to iy from the closest stretch of land in Tofino.

Wayne and Catherine live there with their two kids, Eleanor and Alistair, on 12 platforms that house a number of wooden structures, living spaces, and greenhouses that are all interconnected through a pathway.

The structure has been completely self-sustainable for 20 years. They get fresh water from nearby waterfalls and, in the winter, snow provides them with all their necessary H2O. Electricity comes from solar panels and photovoltaic energy generators. Greenhouses cover their food supply, though the family used to have a hen house as well. That is, until it began to be frequented by meat-eating sea creatures that eventually forced them to get rid of their chickens.

They also view otters completely differently. Most people think otters are cute, but according to Wayne, the otters are more like giant rats that gnaw away at his compound’s foundations.

Funny how your perspective shifts due of your unique lifestyle.
