Layla and Alex never thought they'd spend Christmas Day in the intensive care unit watching over their little girl. Gemma was a normal, healthy four-year-old — but she soon found herself fighting for life, and all because of the flu.
It began with a slight fever, after which Gemma started to feel much better. But three days later, her illness returned. Her skin was pale and her hands were particularly cold. That's when Layla and Alex took Gemma to the ER. Shortly after they arrived, Gemma went into cardiac arrest. For 45 minutes, doctors tried reviving Gemma using CPR, but to no avail. She was placed on life support. Layla and Alex thought their daughter was going to die. "I didn't think of the flu as a serious illness," Layla told CNN.
On the Sunday before Christmas, Layla and Alex enlisted their friends around the world — from Argentina to Miami — to perform a collective mass at the exact same time. And that very same day, a miracle occurred that even doctors can't explain. "Sometimes, we don't understand everything that happens in medicine," says Dr. Jeffrey Jacobs. Now, Layla and Alex have a message for parents everywhere.
