Sure, there've been plenty of gender reveal parties that have happened without an explosion — but it seems as if these gatherings, overall, may be more trouble than they're worth. This gender reveal disaster took the life of a father-to-be, who was trying his hardest to create a fun way to reveal whether his upcoming child was a boy or a girl in 2021.
Unfortunately, now that child will grow up without their biological father nearby. Christopher Pekny, who was only 28, was with his brother Michael when the incident happened. While Michael suffered from injuries, Christopher was reportedly killed immediately.
Hailing from Liberty, New York, Christopher was in his garage working on the gender reveal contraption. In order to reveal the gender, the device was meant to explode. Unfortunately, the brothers had no idea that it was going to detonate when it did.
Police were still in the midst of investigating the situation at the time this article was written, but in examining the device, they think the explosion involved the use of a pipe. While both brothers were said to be gifted in terms of mechanics, it's still always risky to handle explosives in this way. Especially if the explosive could have been exchanged for a cake or something less dangerous that would still get the news across.

Peter, the oldest brother in the family, spoke with the New York Times about the incident. He referred to the accident as "the freakiest of freak accidents that I could ever imagine." It seems as if he had faith in his brothers that they knew how to properly handle the mechanism.
Michael was sent to the hospital, where surgeons worked on his knee, which was damaged in the explosion. "They could fix and do anything," Peter said of his brothers, still in disbelief. He even said that Christopher had an intense hobby in mechanics and often tinkered around with motors and car parts.
In fact, Christopher even earned himself the nickname of "Frankenstein" at his job as a mason based on his ability to put things together. "What he picked up and moved around would have taken three people," said Peter. "I've seen him pick up engine blocks because they were in the way."
"He was really looking forward to starting a family," Peter added. "He was really starting to settle down and grow up." Together, the family helped run a nearby diner called the Robin Hood Diner. Christopher often helped out there as well, waiting tables.
"We are deeply saddened and must inform you all of the loss of our dear [and] beloved Christopher," stated a post on the diner's Facebook page. "We appreciate the overwhelming display of love and support that you all have shown. The Robin Hood will be closed for the immediate future. More details will be posted when we have them available. Thank you."
The diner has been in the family for many years. As the diner's biography reads, "The Pekny family bought the diner around 1980 and have been operating it ever since. Grandma (Klara) still cooks breakfasts almost every morning, and her son Peter Sr. is the head chef/bartender/owner/etc. of the establishment. The food is good and affordable and are the drinks in the tavern."
Christopher reportedly already knew the sex of the baby. According to the Times-Herald Record, both Christopher and his partner, Jennifer Edwards, learned before Christmas that they'd be expecting a son. That means the device was likely meant to delight others who'd be at the party.
While very tragic and unfortunate in every way, this is just yet another gender reveal incident gone bad. Recently, they've been in the news a lot. Not only do people find them to be unnecessary, but they've managed to cause notable fires and damage to communities when incidents happen. It seems as if people want to make the moment memorable but go overboard.
In September 2021, a big fire erupted in California due to a gender reveal party mishap. Known as the El Dorado Fire, it reportedly damaged 10,574 acres of land. The culprit of the catastrophe? A "smoke-generating pyrotechnic device."
It's likely that Peter and the rest of the Pekny family never assumed Christopher would ever be part of this unfortunate trend. "He had his wild side when he was younger. He was really settling down," Peter said to the Record. "I saw, just this past year, how much he was changing, and the hope that he had." Knowing his life was cut short is heartbreaking for everyone.
Christopher and Michael were reportedly very close and did everything together. While Michael is still recovering from the incident, Peter feels as if he'll continuously be devastated over the sequence of events. "My heart breaks for my brother Michael, because he lost not just his brother, but his best friend," Peter stated. "Right now, he's laying in a hospital bed, and Chris ain't in a bed next to him."
But the most devastated person is likely Jennifer, who was preparing for her life to involve Christopher. Now she'll be a single parent and have to one day explain the incident to her son. While accidents do happen, this one is especially devastating. It was Christopher's excitement for his son that made him want to celebrate the news in such a big way.
But maybe this incident will serve as a warning to others. These events don't need to be flashy or include explosives. Family and friends will be excited by the news however it's presented — whether it's by text, cake, piñata, or just word of mouth.
