Having a loved one in the hospital isn't easy. It can be difficult to know exactly what to do, and folks often end up defaulting to sending flowers or balloons.
But that is not your only option!
While flowers and balloons are pretty, cheery gifts for people in the hospital, there are also lots of other less obvious options that your friend or family member will really appreciate. Of course, if they really do love flowers and balloons, feel free to send them along! Just make sure you steer clear of lilies because some folks are allergic to them and they can cause severe headaches.
So, what else can you give to someone at the hospital? Your loved one is probably having a tough time, and they can definitely use at least one of these gifts. Even the smallest gesture can go a very long way when it comes to passing the time in a hospital bed or having a slightly more pleasant stay.

1. Fuzzy Socks
It can get pretty chilly at hospitals, and a nice pair of warm, fuzzy socks can really make a huge difference. The hospital probably has socks, but a comfy pair you picked out personally will be so much better.
2. A Long Phone Charger
Phones are a huge source of entertainment, which can be crucial for a patient in a hospital. A long phone charger cord might make the difference between being able to play games while the phone is charging, and having to wait for it to charge on the table. It's a small thing, but it's important.
3. Moisturizer
Skin can dry out pretty quickly at the hospital, what with all the hand washing. A mild hand lotion can make a big difference in a patient's comfort level. Lip balm is also good — no one likes to have chapped lips.
4. Your Favorite Book
Nothing passes the time like a good book. Why not pick up a copy of one that you know your friend or family member will love too?
5. An Eye Mask And Earplugs
It can get noisy at the hospital, and getting rest when the patient needs it most isn't always easy. Earplugs and an eye mask can help block out some of that extra noise and light.
6. Condiments
Why should anyone have to eat bland food? If flavor is important to your friend or loved one, then talk to their RN and see if it would be all right to bring in some seasoning or condiments. Hospitals don't always allow outside food, so make sure you consult with the nurse or doctor first.
7. Slippers
The slip-on kind of slippers are really great to have at the bedside, because no one likes to step on the cold tile or get their socks all dirty when they go to the bathroom. It really is the little details of comfort that can make a hospital stay more bearable.
8. Pillows
Let's face it: hospital beds and pillows aren't the most comfy places to rest. A good pillow can make getting much-needed rest so much easier. Just make sure that it is clearly labeled with the patient's name so hospital staff doesn't accidentally take it away.
9. Yourself
Always remember to ask before you visit, because there are some people that don't want to be seen or who aren't feeling up for a visit. However, for those who are feeling lonely, a visit from a friend can make a world of a difference. Bring a deck of cards to play a few games and pass the time.
10. A Handmade Card
It's so simple, but it can mean so much. It's so good to know that someone has taken the time to make something especially personal, and when in the hospital, that can really help the healing process. If you're not all that artsy, a heartfelt message on a store-bought card ain't half bad either.
