One man's trash is another man's treasure when it comes to finding unique items at discount stores like Goodwill. That couldn't be more true for one couple who scored big when they stumbled upon a priceless item at the Goodwill store on Patton Avenue in Asheville, NC.
Last June, Sean McEvoy bought a tattered, vintage West Point item for $0.58 in Goodwill's outlet store. After bringing it home and doing a little research, the couple traced the sweater back to its original owner — legendary football coach Vince Lombardi. Now the vintage collectible could fetch more than $20,000!
They couldn't believe their luck and decided to double- and triple-check before telling anyone. They hired an authenticator to verify that this was an actual sweater worn by Lombardi, who served as an assistant at West Point from 1949–1953. The auction house confirmed this was the actual sweater worn by Lombardi.
"They examined the types of fabric that are used on the sweater [and] the different types of stitching," Chris Nerat, consignment director at Heritage Auctions, told ABC News 13. "I think that it could easily hit the $20,000 range."
