When we think of our senior citizen community, it's easy to think in terms of very limited stereotypes: little knitted afghans, shuffleboard, lace doilies, elderly cats…
But these individuals are more than just our little ole' Nanas and Poppops. They're unique individuals with a rich tapestry of interests and experiences behind them!
In fact, given all they've done and seen, they're probably far more interesting than all our young people put together — and the 85-year-old woman you're about to meet certainly proves that.
Doris Diether, a long-time resident of New York City, made headlines with the New York Daily News when she decided to approach a Ricky Syers, young puppeteer in Washington Square Park.
What she had to show this young man forever impacted both of their lives — and is now going viral across the web! This is certainly not your average grandma.

Ricky Syers, a New York artist and puppeteer, was stunned one day when a little elderly woman approached him during his usual performance in the park — but 85-year-old Doris Diether did not come empty-handed.
"I have something for you," she said in just a whisper, as her voice was nearly gone from a vocal chord injury. In her hands, Doris held a scrapbook filled with newspaper clippings about marionettes dating back to the 1970s — including pieces written on Ricky's work!
Ricky was instantly smitten. Over the next few days, he got to work, crafting a special marionette by hand for his new friend Doris. Now, both life-sized and pint-sized Doric can be seen proudly walking through the park, feeding squirrels and making new friends. "She walks around the park, she tells everyone about her puppet," Ricky told the New York Daily News. "She's got this whole new breath of life in her."
