When I was a little girl, I had exactly one really good prank for terrifying my younger siblings: It involved singing “Ring Around The Rosie” and then pretending to suddenly die, and it was extremely effective (to which my poor, traumatized sister and brother will attest).
Despite my great success with this prank, I can’t claim it as an original idea, because this is a trope that horror movies just love to exploit. Tiny, haunting little girls appear again and again in movies designed to chill, like in this terrifying short film that inspired a Guillermo del Toro masterpiece.
I think that what makes spectral, evil children so terrifying is the idea that there’s this sweet, innocent being, and it’s been horribly corrupted into a twisted monster. That’s part of the reason that pranks like my early childhood antics — and this much more masterful variation on the same theme — are so effective for terrifying audiences and unsuspecting passersby alike.
For example, imagine you were walking down the street late at night when the lamps start to flicker, and a tiny figure in a blue dress looms out of nowhere, just barely visible in the shadows. How do you think you would react? If you think you know, watch the video below to see how a few unsuspecting pedestrians responded to the same scenario…
