The holidays are exciting time for countless families — but also, for thieves. Robbers are well aware that most homes will be stocked with gifts and goodies come December — or abandoned completely while homeowners are out of town — so they have a pension for breaking into homes during this time of year. According to the FBI, in 2013 more burglaries took place in December more than any other month that year, the number increasing by nearly 18%.
But as this video is about to show you, there are ways to make theft more difficult. KY3's Cara Restelli tests specially treated windows to see if they can stand up to would-be burglars. She found for less than $100, you can protect your home from break-ins.
First, you'll learn simple ideas to make your windows more secure. Vinyl sheets installed between two pieces of glass, ensuring the interior piece is still intact during an attempted break-in, may cost you more than your average window installation — but it's absolutely worth the piece of mind.
There are also less expensive alternatives at only $50-$80 per window. Experts note that the harder it is to break into a home and the more noise it makes, the likelier they are to move on to other homes.
