Sadly, anyone who's accustomed to city-living is also probably accustomed to seeing homeless people asking for help — but how would you react if the roles were reversed?
One man, Yousef Erakat, decided to pretend to be homeless for a day, holding a sign that said, "No one has ever gone poor by giving." But instead of accepting other people's money, he tried giving his own money to others! You'd think most people would appreciate the gesture from a person they assume is already down on his luck, but what really happened left me furious.
We've seen before that many people have little sympathy for those who live on the street. This restaurant worker denied entry to a man just because he looked like he didn't have money! But I never expected people to react quite so horrendously to someone's kind gesture. Even though we've seen before that homeless people are willing to give what little they have to others in need, these rich people were somehow offended by Yousef's offering…or was it the poignant message on his sign that caused them to act so terribly?
While one woman and one man treated Yousef like a person and even offered him their own money, everyone else in this experiment made me lose a little faith in the human race. In what universe is telling another human "I could buy you" OK? Just like Yousef pointed out, money is no good if you have a poor heart. I hope these arrogant people wake up one day and realize that no matter how fancy your car is, you'll never be truly happy in life until you treat others the way you want to be treated.
