Filmmaker Recreates ‘Happy’ Music Video Using Only Homeless People

Leo York, the man behind the camera lens, takes a moment to record a very important message. "[Often,] it's the simple things that can change the world. Sometimes, it's as simple as doing a little dance. So let's start moving our feet a little more."

That’s precisely what York decided to do when he began approaching people who lived on the street. Many of them said they hadn’t danced in years, let alone thought about trying it now.

But as each man and woman begin to boogie down to the tune of Pharrell Williams’ “Happy” playing in the background, you start to see something miraculous take hold.

They’re smiling, relief and joy written into their every movement. They’re being allowed to have fun for once in a very long time.

We can all relate to music, and maybe something as simple as a popular song and feel-good dance routine might be enough to catch our attention and capture our hearts — all at the same time.

Thanks to York’s simple, yet ingenious video, the lives of people displaced by homelessness are becoming more and more visible in the public eye. It’s a lot like the homeless man who cuts and styles hair for his fellow disadvantaged friends on the street. There’s also that pizza shop doing their part to raise awareness and give back, too.

Rather than ignore this widespread issue, the homeless are finally being given the spotlight, and that’s the greatest gift of all.
