A Latino Family Shares Their Pride And Reservations About Being Americans

This fourth of July it's important that we celebrate all Americans. That means we remember that this country is a melting pot of cultures and identities.

Arisandy, an environmental engineer who served in the military, and Cindy, a legal immigrant-turned-naturalized citizen and realtor, share their story as parents in the United States.

The mini-doc produced by Honey Maid is already garnering some intolerant reactions.

"No immigrants are NOT Americans. That's why the are called 'immigrants,' they come over here illegally and not only are they NOT Americnas [sic] but they inturn [sic] are also law breakers," one commenter wrote.

What's clear is that the commenter is assuming that the Gomez family are immigrants because of their race. Cindy responded to the comment to clarify some things:

"My husband was born in the USA and so did my kids. I came here very legally and I am a naturalized citizen, which by the way it didn't come free. Not all immigrants are illegal… My family including my husband are either serving or have served the military which means that immigrants are defending this country not just Americans."

The family's daughter said she was told by a peer that their parents wouldn't allow them to be friends with her because she isn't white.

It's sad to think that so many young children encounter racism. Recently a little girl was told she couldn't dress up as Disney's Elsa, because "Elsa isn't black."

Arisandy and Cindy hope that by sharing their story they can change the way society views "real Americans."
